Process mapping

Process maps are a common tool used to create a visual representation of the work flow or sequence of events that comprise a production, administrative or service process.

A process map uses a standard set of symbols and geometric shapes to depict a sequence of events, including inputs, output and decision points.

In some cases, these are broken up into "swim lanes" that indicate which function or role the step is assigned to.

Process mapping is commonly used during lean or continuous improvement activities to visualise the current state of a process, identify improvement opportunities and design future state processes.
