Poka Yoke or Mistake Proofing involves using automatic devices / solutions to prevent process errors from occurring or to immediately highlight errors that have occurred and prevent them from reaching the customer.
Mistake proofing solutions / devices can be implemented at various points in the process workflow:
Level 1 (Best) - At the source, before the task is performed
Level 2 (Better) - During the process step or cycle
Level 3 (Good) - At the final inspection, after the process step is complete
Level 1 solutions are the most effective as they target the root cause of errors, while level 2 solutions provide an active warning for personnel during the process and level 3 solutions prevent the error moving to the next step or reaching the customer.
