Autonomous Maintenance (AM) forms a key pillar of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and is a step by step improvement process that aims to prevent the deterioration of production processes and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Autonomous Maintenance activities drive personnel-led continuous improvement by:

Enabling operators to discover problems in production equipment / processes by establishing daily routines of cleaning and inspection
Teaching operators / personnel more about the equipment / processes problems that can occur, as well as how to detect and report them
Establishing a partnership between operators, maintenance, and engineering towards improving and sustaining equipment / process performance & reliability
Establishing ownership for equipment / process preventive maintenance in order to reinforce a sense of pride in the workplace
